Behind the scenes[edit]
As evidenced by AI nodes in the map file and pre-release screenshots, Datacore was originally supposed to be part of Half-Life's single-player mode.
The maintenance hall area of Datacore later inspired the design of the entrance to the Black Mesa Biodome Complex in Half-Life: Opposing Force.
The PlayStation 2 version is a slimmed down version of the map, lacking the eastern half of the level with the Long Jump Module area.
In the February 17, 2005 update of Half-Life 2: Deathmatch,[2] the game received a remake of Datacore in the form of the new map Steam Lab which changed the level's original setting while still retaining the same layout and item placements.[3]
