The Xen Grenade is a Xen bioweapon featured in Half-Life: Alyx.
Overview
Xen Grenades are roughly spherical organic growths riddled with fluorescent green dots. They are grown by a pedestal-like sentient Xen plant life form that appears as a large bulbous base with an arm-like appendage sprouting out of the top that extends up to a claw with tentacle-like fingers. The grenades are produced from an orifice centered in the "palm" of its claw.
To obtain a Xen Grenade, one must manually pick it from the plant, but it will attempt to protect the grenade if anything tries to take it, clasping onto it tightly with its tentacles if it detects anything near. Alyx Vance is unable to use the Gravity Gloves to do this and must either quickly snatch it from the plant's grip, resulting in the plant expressing audible disappointment, or tickle the base of the plant, at which point it will naturally present the grenade without any resistance. Xen Grenades will continually regenerate on their pedestals after they have been taken; however, Alyx can only carry a maximum of four at a time (two in both hands, two in her wrist pockets).
The grenade is used by squeezing it to prime it and then throwing it at a target. When primed, it will inflate into a smooth sphere, glow green, and emit clicking sounds before exploding. It performs comparatively to the standard Combine Grenade and can similarly be attached to the grenade launcher extension of the Shotgun and fired at enemies, detonating directly on impact.

Trivia
- The Xen Grenade is quite similar to the Bloater, suggesting that they are related in some way.
- The Xen Grenade bears a striking similarity to the cut Hopwire Grenade. However, it differs completely in function.
- There is a cut entity in Alyx called "
xen_foliage_turret" that uses the same model as the Xen Grenade plant. Instead of dispensing grenades, it fires floating projectiles that home in on anyone who walks too close to it, in a similar fashion to the Hivehand. In the game files, the projectiles use Shotgun shells as a placeholder model.
