The Bloater is a dangerous kind of sac-like Xen flora, which violently explodes when an organic being comes into close proximity, first featured in Half-Life: Alyx.
Overview[edit]
Bloater sacs are commonly found in the City 17 Quarantine Zone, where the Xenian infestation is most prominent. It is unknown if Bloaters are a form of Xen flora themselves or simply a type of defense mechanism for something else. When any organic being comes close to a Bloater, it will begin swelling until its sac violently ruptures, resulting in an explosion that damages anything near it. Bloaters will also detonate if shot or otherwise damaged. If the organic being leaves the general vicinity of a Bloater before it ruptures, it will shrink back to its normal size.
Some Zombies have growths adhering to their limbs that are a form of the Bloater.[1] These glowing green growths are highly volatile and act as weak points as they explode upon being shot, instantly killing the Zombie.
