Appearances[edit]
Half-Life[edit]
The emergency flare was originally to appear in Half-Life, but it was cut during the development. Its model can be found in the game files.
Half-Life 2[edit]
Flares are seen in Half-Life 2, but they are smaller, shot by a flare gun, and are only used by Metrocops and Combine Soldiers. The flare gun was originally to be used by Gordon and can be found in the Half-Life 2 leak.
Half-Life 2: Episode One[edit]
In Episode One, usable emergency flares are introduced in the City 17 Underground. The "emergency flare" text and arrow symbols flares glow in the dark, making them easier to spot in unlit areas. They ignite automatically when picked up by the player, and last for 25 seconds before burning out. They can be held and thrown with the Gravity Gun, mimicking the operation of a flare gun, and providing light to the player in dark areas at long ranges. In addition to providing light, flares are useful as a weapon, setting Zombies, Headcrabs, and Combine Soldiers on fire upon contact.
Half-Life 2: Episode Two[edit]
The emergency flares appear only once, in the Episode Two chapter Under the Radar, inside a Resistance cache full of Supply Crates with transponders attached to them.
