During the early stages of of Half-Life 2's development, a leather suit was to be worn by Gordon Freeman.[2]
Overview[edit]
In one of the early incarnations of the game's storyline, Gordon was to become an agent for a worldwide resistance force, "possibly" in the service of the G-Man, along with other agents. Artist Dhabih Eng wanted to go into another direction and turned the original Hazardous Environment Suit from the first game into a black, leather/latex stealth suit with various devices latched onto it and more belt buckles. Its appearance was to be reminiscent of a torture suit or a straitjacket, "something out of a Clive Barker film", as well as evocative of the stillsuit from the 1984 film Dune.[1][2][3]
The suit would still have provided a user interface and a "more sinister" AI voice,[4] also functioning alongside a parasitic implant put in Gordon's brain that would kill him if he went against orders.[2]
The leather suit was cut along with its associated storyline after Gabe Newell questioned why the game would abandon Half-Life's orange HEV Suit, which had become an iconic element along with the Crowbar.[1][4]
By the time the suit was cut, textures files had already been created. Hand and forearm textures can be found in the Half-Life 2 leak in the folder for the viewmodel of the Flare Gun, although no model using these materials is still present. Dialogue from Odell in this build, known to be some of the earliest recorded for the game,[5] appears to make reference to the leather suit, calling it uncomfortable-looking.[6]
