The identity of "Open your eyes" model[edit]

The article states that As of today, the identities of both the Valve guys appear to be lost as Valve apparently did not keep track of their identities, the fact they are not professional models making it very difficult, if not impossible, to identify them.

However, I remembered this.

In before going "who is this random guy, why is he credible", Jon Knoles is an industry veteran himself: https://www.mobygames.com/person/1140/jon-knoles/

So, is the twitter chain good enough to state that the model is Todd Miller? Personally I'm convinced enough by the photos (the shape of ear, lips, eyes). — Unsigned comment by Cvoxalury

First, it must be made clear that this is not absolute confirmation of the man's identity, nor is the source of the information one who could explicitly offer such confirmation (he's not a Valve employee, not the photographer, not someone directly involved at all with this branding campaign). However, what we do have is someone with pertinent credentials (Jon Knoles is an established developer in the industry from the Seattle area) offering compelling evidence (unseen photos of someone he knew who does bear a striking resemblance to the Mr. Valve guy) as to the matter at hand. But, also be sure to note that, from his exact words in this tweet, he only "believes it's him." Certainly he's stating a strong feeling in this regard, but he objectively does not know for certain if his friend from years prior is Mr. Valve, nor is he in a position in which he could prove it himself. He also thinks it's a stock photo, so we know he's not fully informed on the situation.
With these facts laid out, what we ultimately have here is still speculation. It comes from a believable source who has offered more of a lead than we've ever had before, but it's still not not a conclusive answer to this longstanding mystery. Unfortunately, the lead itself is an immediate dead end since there's been no success in finding anything on a "Todd Miller" who attended the Art Institute of Seattle. Thus, we can't even verify if this is a real person.
And now that leaves what's currently stated in the article. It's true that Valve didn't keep track of these models, and it's also true that both are still unidentified. We now have speculation as to the identity of one of the men, but by no means is this close to confirming it. Nonetheless, what we can say is that this speculation isn't completely blind, and it comes from an individual who's credible. I'm not against stating reasonably supported speculation in the article, as long as it's appropriately noted that it's speculation. I can get around to writing something myself when I have the time, but if you'd like, you're welcome to draft an addition that I can look over and thus get it incorporated into the article quicker. I believe if you get around to it you can do it better than I (but I'll think of some ways it could be worded carefully, I guess). It's not like I opened this topic intending for someone else to do all the work for me, I opened it because indeed it's not a solid proof so I didn't want to just throw into the article without consulting on it. At the very least this manages to provide some awareness of this possibility, which is more than nothing. Cvoxalury (talk) 20:49, 30 April 2024 (MSK)
