Memory Replacement is a psycho-engineering process used by the Combine for transforming humans into Overwatch Soldiers and Overwatch Elites. Some Civil Protection Officers are able to willingly undergo such processes to advance through the CP ranks.

[edit] Overview
This process is generally done through use of machines capable of operating memory-cells of the human brain without the need to expose the brain itself. Memory-replacement results in all episodic memories being wiped out and replaced with combat training programming and Combine indoctrination. This does not mean that personality is totally erased as it is done with Stalkers, but all episodic memory is wiped, so the subject no longer remembers who they were before the procedure. This procedure ensures that no Overwatch soldier is able to rebel against the Combine. Memory replacement was carried out in Nova Prospekt and the Citadel.
