The Black Mesa Biodome Complex is a location featured in Half-Life: Opposing Force in the chapter Vicarious Reality.

Overview[edit]

The Biodome Complex is a large facility located in Sector E of the Black Mesa Research Facility.[2] It contains a series of simulated environments where captured alien biota are kept and observed in artificial recreations of their natural habitats. Alongside these enclosures are laboratories where scientists perform studies and tests on the creatures in closer detail. Some parts of the facility appear to be under construction at the time of the incident.

The Spore Launchers can be found in one of the containment rooms. These creatures are actually infant versions of the Shock Troopers. It is possible that the scientists had encounters with members of Race X before the incident.

Behind the scenes[edit]

The Biodome Complex was created by David Mertz.[1] He was responsible for its design, construction, implementation of architecture, and gameplay.[3] According to Mertz, the complex was initially constructed as a whole, then broken up into the three levels. He was very happy with its modular design, game flow, and unique look which still managed to capture the feel of Black Mesa.[4] The entrance of the complex is based on the maintenance hall from the multiplayer map Datacore. There is a multiplayer map called Black Mesa Biodomes based on the location in the game's Capture The Flag mode.

There is a broken glass case labeled "007" in the specimen room where the player finds the Barnacle Grapple. This is a reference to James Bond and his tendency to escape.
